💡 5 Red Flags to Watch in Creators

Let’s be honest: finding influencers is easy.

Finding the right ones? That’s where it breaks.

I’ve seen both sides of this play out:

👉 A golf brand we work with got 2M+ views and 30x daily sales from just $1K, by partnering with a niche short-form creator who truly fit their audience.

👉 Meanwhile, Lord & Taylor ran a campaign with 50 micro-influencers. The results? Over 13,000 likes and tons of exposure.

But despite the hype, sales didn’t follow

Why? Poor audience match and lack of disclosure killed the results.

The difference? Creator fit.

Here’s my 5-point creator checklist 👇

1️⃣ Performance – On the Right Format

Start here:
Are they strong on the content format your campaign depends on?

  • If you're running Reels, check average Reel views

  • For carousels, prioritize saves and shares

  • For Stories, focus on tap-forward rate or link clicks if available

📌 Don’t just default to engagement rate. Format matters.

💡 Pro Tips: Always compare performance to industry standards. For ex., check the average eng. rate per follower size to see if the engagement rate of a creator is good - use our free tool here to check.

2️⃣ Audience – Match > Size

You’re not buying followers—you’re buying attention from the right people.

Look at:

  • Age

  • Gender

  • Country + city

  • Fake followers ratio

📌 Ask for audience data (screenshots), or use a platform like Click Analytic to check from 1K+ followers.

Example: For a skincare brand targeting Gen Z women in Spain, a nano-creator with 80% female audience aged 18–24 and 70%+ Spanish location is infinitely more valuable than a global beauty macro-influencer with misaligned reach.

3️⃣ Style – Does Their Voice Match Yours?

Some creators are visually polished. Others feel raw and real.

Neither is better - what matters is brand alignment.

  • Does their tone match yours?

  • Does their feed feel like a place your product belongs?

  • Do their previous brand posts feel natural—or forced?

Example: Rare Beauty only works with creators who share honest, emotionally-driven storytelling. That voice is the brand. The match matters more than metrics.

4️⃣ Collaboration – Are They a Partner or a Poster?

One big red flag?
A creator who just asks, “When’s the deadline?”

The best ones, they ask questions OR suggest ideas.

Example: BÉIS turned a creator’s casual TikTok pitch into a full Father's Day campaign. The difference? That creator pitched value, not just a fee.

5️⃣ Proof – Do Brands Work with Them Again?

This one’s simple:
If a brand comes back, it’s working.

📌 Scan their feed for repeat brand names. Or use the Brand Mentions on Click Analytic filter to check for ongoing partnerships.

Example: Brands like Gymshark and Glow Recipe rarely test once. They build long-term relationships with creators who convert—and expand from there.
